My Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) Session

7056893Just over three weeks ago I got an idea from a friend who stumbled upon a recent Reddit post.

What happened was that a lawyer who specializes in small business litigation started a Reddit ‘ask me anything’ (AMA) in the small business section. He prompted people to ask him legal questions about their business and replied with helpful advice from (presumably) the many years of experience he had acquired in the field.

For those of you unfamiliar with Reddit, it is one of the largest forums on the internet.
In the AMA section, you basically post a thread stating who you are (along with verifiable proof to the moderators as to ascertain your authenticity) and/or what your service is. As soon as you launch the thread, a bunch of random strangers from across the world begin positing questions to you that pertain to that specialty or expertise.

” Reddit … is one of the largest forums on the internet “

There are options to ‘up’ or ‘down’ a post. The posts with more ‘up’ votes get pushed to the top, while posts with 5 or more ‘down’ votes become hidden and require an additional action to reveal them.

That got me thinking — what if I do the same thing only with my area of experience – DUIs? I decided to put my skills to the test. I wanted to see how I could answer questions in real time to complete strangers about this fascinating and complex field of law. (You can find it here.)

I was surprised by the results.

Most of the questions were what one would expect, such as:
“…[w]hat is the proper way to handle myself to minimize my chances of getting a felony DUI conviction?” and “Do you have any moral issues with what you do?

Others were a little stranger: “…[b]efore the cop gets out of the car, I get out of my car, drop my keys, and starting chugging Maker’s Mark … Did I escape a DUI by making the BAL [sic] tests inconclusive?” and “Let’s say your client gets pulled over by a cop, admits to drinking 6 beers at the bar, fails the field sobriety test, [and] fails the breath test, … is he doomed to a felony DUI conviction?

One poster jokingly said, “‘DUI Solo Practitioner’ makes it sound like you chug Jim Beam while alone and driving in your car.” (I love people with a sense of humor.)

The experience can be equated to having a mini-conference with a particular sort of people who are interested in the information you have to offer and have specific questions about what you do — only, you know, virtually.

Despite a couple of outliers, most of the questions were on point and the users were very courteous, professional, and a pleasure to deal with. This was my first personal experience with Reddit, and it did not disappoint.

Reddit is a lovely community, especially because people on there have netiquette and DON’T YELL WHEN ASKING QUESTIONS?!?! (with a bunch of unnecessary exclamation points and question marks.) People underestimate how powerful it is to be able to properly convey your message via text online and not coming off as rude or obnoxious.

” People underestimate how powerful it is to be
able to properly convey your message via text online “

I had a pleasure sharing my knowledge with people who were curious about what they are to do when getting pulled over and how the Constitution protects them if they were to ever get pulled over (for a DUI or otherwise.)

The best piece of advice is, of course don’t drink and drive!
